Childhood Obesity

Help! My Kids are Overweight!

If you are a parent concerned about childhood obesity you are not alone.

The kids and youth of today are fatter than ever before and parents are starting to panic. Childhood obesity has been called an epidemic and something needs to be done about it.

It puts our children's health at risk. More kids are being diagnosed with Type II diabetes than ever before. It can affect their cardiovascular system, cause depression, and affect their self esteem. The question remains, what can we do to help our kids?

The anwser is found in one simple equation. Energy In vs. Energy Out. This same equation is used by anyone wanting to lose or control their weight and it's no different for children.

Energy In

Parents today are busier than ever, organizing hectic schedules and trying to be in at least three different places at once.

Fast food is virtually on every street corner, making it extremely easy and convenient. Kids eat more fast food, sugary and processed foods than you did, mostly from convenience. These foods are filled with excessive calories that cause weight gain.

The solution to this problem is to take a look at what your kids are eating. Are they eating regular balanced meals? Are they consuming fruits and vegetables daily? If they are eating their fruits and veggies, are they getting 5 servings of them daily? Limit the quantity of processed and sugary foods. Fill your shopping cart with fresh, healthy snacks and plan ahead to avoid quick stops at the drive thru.

Energy Out

Computers, video games and the latest in T.V are our children's greatest toys. Who has time to play when they need to invite their newest webkinz over or buy them food, or their favourite T.V show is about to start. Kids are more sedentary than any generation than ever before.

The solution to this is very reasonable. Limit the time your children spend watching T.V, or playing computer or video games. Sign them up for a sports team in your neighborhood to run and be active with other kids their age.

If a team sport doesn't work, there is always good ol family fun. Take the kids to the park and actually run around with them. Play a game of tag or soccer. Get involved. Be the example. Your kidswill be more active if you get more active. Make it fun! If it's fun, they'll want to do it, and so will you!

As a parent, you have the responsibility to teach your children about the healthy habits of eating well and exercising. Children who are obese now will have a greater chance of being obese as adults, increasing their risk of serious health problems.

By implementing small changes now, you will begin to fight the battle of childhood obesity. Talk to your children about making healthy choices, and make it a family effort to start eating healthier and adding daily physical activity. You will be pleasantly surprised and may even create some of the best family memories and traditions to pass on.
