Female bodybuilding competitor – Leanne Waller
We recently caught up with Leanne Waller an avid fitness fanatic, female bodybuilding competitor and all round gorgeous woman with muscles. Here is what she had to say.
Give me a brief introduction about yourself.
Hi, my name is Leanne Waller, I am 27 years old. I have competed in two female bodybuilding shows since starting my fitness journey and transformation in January 2016.
What made you become a body builder?
Well, to cut a long story short I found the life style and discipline I apply through body building has helped me gain control over an eating disorder. I am a binge eater, but through this lifestyle I manage to keep myself grounded.
What are the 5 most important things you can tell someone who is wanting to start?
- Don’t give up, slow progress is still process. Body building takes time, it’s not called “body building” for nothing.
- Follow inspirational athletes, message them, talk to them, they are real people.
- Don’t believe everything you see, even salt looks like sugar, just saying.
- Diet is so important, you can’t out train a bad diet. Get in touch with a nutritionist, have your diet monitored, it helps keep you on the straight and narrow. No one wants a bad weigh in.
- Focus! Your biggest challenge comes when you need to mentally push through when you are physically exhausted. Resting bitch face is a real thing, it’s called FOCUS.
Do you gym every day?
I train 6 days a week, with one day rest. Closer to comp I double up on 3 or 4 sessions, training fasted cardio in the morning and weights in the evening. So 6 sessions become 9 or 10 sessions per week.
Do you get asked if you take steroids?
Yes, people are convinced if you have muscles it must be from steroids. Wrong! With correct training and diet you can achieve great results. But the magic ingredient is TIME!!!!
Do people think it’s strange that you are a female body builder?
Nope, I often get asked when I’m out shopping how I got my body. To which I reply, “Hard work and dedication”.
Have you been called butch/manly and how do you handle those situations?
No, I compete in Fitness Bikini, the body requirements are far from butch or manly.
What is your basic training schedule?
My programmes change every 3-4 weeks.
Depending on the timelines out from my comp I’ll either be on a “bulk programme” this is to gain good clean lean muscle mass. The programme will have heavy weights with low reps.
Closer to comp the programme changes to a “cutting programme” this is to lean out the muscle mass and give a tighter over all look. The programme will consists of lighter weights and higher rep rangers.
Do you take any supplements and which ones do you suggest?
As athletes we requiring more from our bodies so it’s only fair what we take out we put back.
Vitamins: Multi Vit, Vit C, Vit B, Iron, Flaxseed and Cranberry Extract
Supplements: BCAA, L Glutamine, L Carnitine, Whey Protein Isolate and Cassin Powder
How did you get into female body building?
The trainer I was training with at the time planted the seed. It was always something I admired but I never thought I had the right body, which in fact I didn’t. But that is why we train and eat like we do, we all have the ability to achieve the body we want, only thing between you and your new body is …. hard work and discipline.
14 weeks of show prep, diet and training and I stepped on stage placing 2nd at my first Fitness Show.
Is female body building super competitive?
For me personally, no not at all. I found all the athletes to be extremely helpful and supportive. But, outside the gym and the competitive world I find there is a lot of bitchness and jealousy going around via social media. I try not to get involved, blowing out someone else’s candle doesn’t makes yours shine any brighter. I believe if you have nothing nice to say rather don’t say anything at all.
Do you have another job or do you body build full time?
Yes, I work full time. So training, shopping and food prep needs to happen outside of my working hours. Yay for 5am gym sessions.
