Moon In June

Our latest outdoor adventure was the Moon In June 5k road running race. The turn out for the race was huge, with runners coming from all over. kids running race

One of the coolest things to see was 230 kids under the age of 11 participate in the kids' 1k fun run. Talk about inspiring! These young "athletes" showed us all how to have heart and work hard and yet have a blast doing it.child running fast

So what is it that makes someone want to run a 5k or in the case of the kids, take part in a fun run? Well, there are several factors.

First of all, there's no denying that there are health benefits to running. We know that by elevating our heart rate for even just 20 minutes, three times a week will help us to reap great rewards over our lifetime. Besides the cardiovascular improvements, you'll also be burning calories.

I'd like to add something here about burning calories, and it's this: burning calories is great, but if you don't eat well it will not make you lose weight. Weight loss is a simple equation of calories in vs. calories out.

This isn't the focus of today's article, but I can't tell you how many times I've had people say to me "hey I'm exercising, how come I'm not losing weight?" When we take a look at their diet, it's quickly revealed that they still consume more than what they burn.

As soon as I write the article expanding on this, I'll be sure to put a link here. Meanwhile, suffice it to say that being healthy is exercise and healthy eating combined.

Okay, back to the Moon In June!

Another feature of a race like the Moon In June is definitely the social atmosphere. Every year, after the race, I always find myselfhaving fun at the moon in june saying "That was so much fun"! It's the people that we meet up with, or meet for the first time, that help to make it so great.

As you stand in the crowd awaiting the start of the race, conversations get started with people that you've never met before and they always conclude with "good luck" or "have fun" with the occasional joking "I'm gonna smoke ya'!"

Those not running are also there to support. I love running through the neighborhoods of Burlington, having fun runningand seeing the residents out on their front lawns in lawn chairs cheering on the runners and, on hot days, sometimes providing the runners with a cool misting from a hose or sprinkler.

Finally, some find the opportunity to compete, even on a friendly level, helps them to have the extra encouragement that they need to push themselves to improve and to stay active.

For me, I have so much fun at Burlington's Moon In June every year, and it's a combination of all of these factors. I also love seeing some my personal training or boot camp clients doing this for the first time and finishing something that previously they might never have considered, or doing so much better than they thought they ever could.

Oh, and I can't forget, seeing thefun with friends kids getting fit and having so much fun! The organizers of the race do a great job of helping them to feel special, everyone cheers the loudest for them, and at the end of the race they all get a medal, a prize and (the best part) a big yummy freezie!

So come on everyone! Take a look around in your community and join some of the fun things that there are to do that will help you to remember that fitness is fun, and being fit (or pursuing it) can give you so many more opportunities to enjoy what life has to offer.
