Overcoming Obstacles

"Bumpy Roads Ahead"

Have you ever had trouble overcoming obstacles while trying to reach a goal? Well if you are a busy executive, on the run parent, stressed out student or just simply human—I guarantee you have encountered challenges big and small while trying to reach your goals.

bumpy road sign I was just in beautiful Quebec skiing with the family for March break. As we were making our way back home, we stopped in Ottawa to visit family and take a day to go to a sugar bush farm and see how maple syrup is made. We turned onto this long road that takes us down to the farm and at the very beginning my husband saw a sign and commented “bumpy roads ahead for 8 kms”. As we continued down the road it was indeed bumpy and we had to slow down at times but we did eventually get there and thought “what a bumpy road”.

Why am I telling you all this? Because life is a road. It is filled with different surfaces. It can be smooth, have many curves, steep hills and definitely be bumpy at times. The question is … how do you deal with those bumpy roads when they arise?

  1. Decide to Decide

If you are sitting on the fence then you will never reach your goal. If you want to get out of debt but don’t have a plan, my friend you will always be in debt. If you would like to lose 20 lbs but never do anything about it like change your eating habits and exercise regularly, you will never lose it.

Decide what you want and then just do what it takes to get there.

  2. Enlist Help

Everyone has goals. Some goals require the help of others. Sometimes you need to enlist the help of a professional, other times simply asking friends and family will do the trick.

The more people who know about your goal, the more help and encouragement you will get and when you hit a “bumpy” part in the road, that extra support is invaluable.

  3. Plan for “Bumpy Roads Ahead”

We all have to work at overcoming obstacles, but I know they will make us stronger and wiser. No one is perfect. Expect the unexpected and when something doesn’t go exactly as planned — don’t worry. Tomorrow is always a fresh start to begin again and get back on track.

Your goals, especially the bigger ones are generally always at the end of 8 kms of bumpy road, but by knowing your goal, making a plan and sticking with it, no matter what obstacles you are face with, you will succeed!
