Too Old To Exercise

Have you caught yourself saying this. I'm too old to exercise. If only I had started when I was younger. I'm too busy, why start now? Well I have news for you. You are never too old to exercise or to busy for that matter.

You can start at any age. 20,50,70 or even 80 years or more. By incorportating a strength program into your routine will give you nothing but benefits.

If you continue to live your life without making time for exercise you will eventually see some big problems.

Your weight will begin to increase, and with that almost always comes high blood pressure, high cholesterol, often diabetes and many other problems. Perhaps one of the most noticable is that your muscle and joints begin to degenerate. When this happens simple daily tasks become difficult and you are left feeling aches and pains all the time.

If you are thinking "I'm already there, I am too old to exercise" what good would it do me now? Exercise improves your quality of life, no matter when you start.

Dr. Robert Butler of the National Institute on Aging said that "If exercise could be put into a pill, it would be the single most prescribed medicine in the world."

Imagine if a pill could offer all these benefits without the risk of harmful side effects:

  • Reduces the risk of stroke, cancer and osteoporosis
  • Reduces the risk of diabetes
  • Helps relieve depression
  • Improves well being and reduces stress
  • Improves energy, sleep and confidence
  • Helps prevent and treat chronic medical conditions associated with old age
  • Helps maintain a healthy body weight
Now, exercise may not be as easy as taking a pill three times a day, but with some consistency exercise will give you the benefits listed above.

With all these amazing benefits why are so few taking advantage of a regular exercise program?

Excuses, Excuses, Excuses

Some of the most common excuses I hear on a regular basis:

  • No Time: You do not need to spend hours in the gym. You can get a great workout in 20-30 minutes and see fantastic results in 2-3 times a week. I know everyone has 20-30 min. to spare 2-3 times a week!

  • Exercise is Boring: There are literally thousands of exercises to choose from. Most people get stuck doing 10-12 exercises and therefore get bored easily.

  • Exercise is Confusing: Not when you work with a trained professional (me).

  • It's Too Expensive: Exercise can literally cost you nothing. Just take it outside and enjoy the fresh air. If you need a little extra TLC then there are many programs that are inexpensive (we offer many:) ).

    Get Started!

Decide to Decide. Once you have made the decision to exercise regularly, do it. Tell your family and friends. Let your co-workers know of your goals. Enlist the help of others. It won't always be easy but you will love the benefits and will feel great!

Set Goals. Have small goals that will take you step by step to your larger goals. Remember it took many years to get out of shape, don't expect to be perfect in one week. The key to long term success is consistency.

Rearrange Your Schedule. Jim Rohn said "Unless you change how you are,you will always have what you've got". If you don't book exercise into your schedule it won't happen. Set aside 30-60 minutes for exercise and then stick with it.

Dont let another day pass you by wishing you were in better health. Don't think you are too old to exercise. You deserve the good life. Take action now.
